EASTER SPECIAL! DIY Chocolate + Recipe!!

Homemade dark chocolate, mm mmmmm!

I made these chocolates for my family this easter, and they were delish!

So if this picture doesn't make you want to stuff your face, I don't know what will! Wanna make some? Yeah? Alrighty, this is what you need:

~ 6tbsp Cocoa powder (or ground cocao beans, but they're 'spensive!)
~ 5tbsp Coconut oil. I got mine from safeway for 6 bucks (coles sells for $10) and so far I have gotten three batches out of it.
~ 1 1/2tbsp Honey or syrup (or a little more for sweeter chocolate, but that makes it fudgier! You could use sugar and dissolve it in over the heat!)
~1/4tsp vanilla extract
~ Some kind of chocolate mould. Now, I recommend silicone moulds so they're easier to get out. You could use an ice cube tray, but it takes a lot of banging to get the choccies out! You could also line a tray with baking paper and pour the chocolate out on it, then when it's set take it out and break it up, or wrap it up as a big slab!

Let's go!

1. Melt your coconut oil over a medium heat until all melted.
2. Take the oil off the heat and add all your ingredients and mix well!
3. Pour it in to your tray, or spoon it in to your moulds, and pop it in the fridge to set! Yippee!

And then when it's all done, wrap it nice and give it to your friends and family! This is how I did mine:

Enjoy!

A couple of thousand years ago, one man paid the ultimate sacrifice. He died, humiliated, for us, out of love. Now we are all forgiven because of that one man. How blessed are we! Happy Easter!!

There's nothing like a trip to the op shop with a couple of good friends.

If I were to go to Wonderland, this is what I would wear.
The shirt is thrifted, and was about $5
The dress once belonged to my oldest sister
The belt was thrifted for $2

Yes I do have other bags and shoes.....I just reeeeally like these ones!!
The shoes were thrifted for six bucks
The socks were a Christmas present
The bag was thrifted for three dollars.

The best jacket in the world, from the best boyfriend in the world.

Inspiring Artist: Mark Crilley.

Lately I have taken to watching drawing and painting tutorials on YouTube because I've been too tired to do much of my own work for some time now, and WOW, there are some seriously talented people out there. One youtuber in particular I have been absolutely loving is Mark Crilley. He specialises in manga, which I have never had an interest in doing myself, but I absolutely adore his techniques for colouring his illustrations and backgrounds.....along with his occasional dragon tutorials ;) (yes, I admit to being a bit of a fantasy nerd).

He has mastered a mixed media type of illustration, mainly working with watercolour (my favourite medium), coloured pencils (my other favourite medium),  dry pastels, and gouache (which is a miracle worker.)

Mark uploads every Friday, and I find myself visiting YouTube constantly checking if and what he has uploaded and getting very excited when I see if involves watercolour and/or dragons. His imitations of surfer dudes and gangsters certainly make for interesting viewing. And his realism challenges.....WOW. Just woweeeeeeeee! They make me want to pick up my pencils and draw and draw and draw until I can't tell the difference between my drawing and the muse. And trust me, I would, if I had the energy! This is my particular favourite:

So uh, if you like to draw, or fancy having your socks knocked off, swing on by to his YouTube and prepare to be amazed!!

I just wish he'd do a tutorial on how to draw a portrait, then I would never leave his channel.

(see his works here)
(see his Youtube here)

That is all!

DIY: Fresh Pasta without a Pasta Machine!! (Gluten free)

Um, YES please!!

I made this with my lovely boyfriend, it was a bit of an experiment, but it worked! It was one of those light bulb moments you have when you're desperately trying to get to sleep.

Okidoke. Let's do this thing.

Let's see what we need...

A bowl.
A rolling pin.
A fork.
A wooden spoon or other stirring device.
Four eggs (small). Less if they are large.
300g  of plain flour (I'm gluten intolerant, hence the gluten free flour).
And if you are making gluten free, and you have some within reach, use a quarter teaspoon of Xanthan gum. You don't need it, but it helps the pasta from breaking up too much.
Your hands!

This recipe makes about enough for two large servings. Yummeh.

Method:

 First.

Measure your flour and pour it in to your bowl and add + mix in the xanthan gum

And then.

Make a little well in ze middle, and then.....

Crack your eggs in to the middle! Ours spilled :(

(avoid this)

So, now we....

Gently whisk the eggs, without letting any flour in. Once you've done that, slowly add in the flour and mix it till all the flour is mixed together.

And then we want to:

Bring the dough together until it is all stuck.

Next, we:

Knead it.

And pat it on to a floured work surface.

And after that we:

Grab that rolling pin and get rolling! Roll it out as thin as you want the pasta to be (keeping in mind the fact that it will swell when cooked). In hindsight, I would say separate the dough prior to rolling it out and roll out those pieces. That way you could get them as thin as you want without rolling the dough over your entire kitchen bench. We were confined to a piece of cling film because we didn't want to messy our bench...so our pasta was fairly thick! (Phew, "rolling" is an odd word when you write it out that many times!)

(I would recommend wearing an apron)

When you have finished that:

Make sure that the surface of the dough is floured. Now for the cool trick! Roll it up from end to end (props to Jamie Oliver for this idea!). Then chop up the roll as wide or as narrow as you'd like your pasta to be, and take each piece and un-roll it carefully, and pop it in to a bowl! Then sit back and admire your handiwork whilst you boil your pot of water.

And finally....

Cook it up, and dish it up! We are so hungry we forgot to take a photo of the finished product...Ooops!!

This was a bit of an experiment, and the next time I do it I would probably roll out the dough thinner amongst various other changes. As I improve I will update you on the new procedures! Either way though, it was delicious.

See you next time!

Inspiring Artists: Anne Ten Donkelaar

This chick is crazy. She takes collage to a whole new level of PHWOAR! Anne Ten Donkelaar makes these amazing pieces with pressed wildflowers, paper cut outs and broken stems, laid on top of tiny little pins to create  3D works of wonderfulness. I just love the colours she uses, they are so bright and cheery!

February Favorites!

Welcome to my very first February favorites! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Beauty!

Face:

OH, Revlon super lustrous lipstick, you make me want to go all Shakespearean on you! No words can describe how wonderful thy product is.  These lipsticks are incredible. They moisturise, they are long lasting....and the selection of colours is just FABULOUS. The price tag, however, doth make angels cry. I only buy these when they are on sale, or ask for them as a gift, although SOMEtimes I will treat myself and put some money aside and buy myself a colour I have been particularly wanting.

My favourite colour at the moment would have to be “Blushing Nude,” it’s an incredibly versatile shade and has a tendency to pick up the tones in the makeup/clothing you have adorned yourself with and match itself accordingly. Magical, yes?

Hair:

Alchemy Shampoo and Conditioner Pack

Usually, I would wash my hair with some kind of concoction I have brewed up from the innards of my pantry. At the moment however, I have to spare my energy, and making shampoo and conditioner is not something I can splurge my tiring reserves on. So, my dear mother went out in search of some wonderful, natural shampoo and conditioner, and wonderfully natural shampoo and conditioner she did find in the form of Al’chemy Rosemary and Jojoba hair shampoo and conditioner. Huzzah!

For one thing, these products smell heavenly and leave your hair wonderfully scented for days. The ingredients are almost 100% natural (woopee!!) and leave your hair very happy with you. I tend to get a relatively oily scalp, and my ends break really easily no matter how much care, love and attention I pour on to my hair (curse ye, chronic fatigue!), but I do find that this shampoo and conditioner leaves my hair relatively happy with me.

Once again, though, they are pricey! $15 a pop to be exact, but despite the apparently meagre amount of product in fairly small bottles, they last a while!

Pastimes!

Movie

My favourite movie this month has GOT to be Safe Haven. I went in expecting a soppy chick flick, and instead I got an action packed, well acted, very cute slap in the face. I was even more thrilled to see an Australian actor (who formerly played the role of E.T in one of my childhood favourite shows, Sea Patrol)  do a reeeeeaaaallllllyyy good job at playing the obsessive-abusive-alcoholic husband. Double whammy.

Crochet

I sell these crochet collars on my Etsy store!

Crochet is really worth learning, once you get  the basic gist of it there’s a lot you can do. I taught myself how to crochet (after being taught by my mother how to do the “double crochet” stitch YEARS ago) through youtube when I first got sick, and I love love LOVE it! It doesn’t take much thought or physical effort which is perfect for me,  and there are so many things you can make! I started a granny square blanket the other day (get the pattern here) and I’m just relaxing watching movies and creating a work of art! It’s fantastic.

Book

At the moment I’m loving Jane Eyre. The language is gorgeous, and the story is riveting! Not to mention the book itself is a stunner (available here) . It’s exceedingly different to the movie, which is fantastic as well, and keeps you on your toes and leaves you completely baffled at times. Thanks to my sister for recommending it to me! I wish we spoke like they did back in those days! Deuce and confusticate this lazy language, I say.

Bits and Bobs

Homemade chocolate.

Prepare to be blown away. This stuff is explosive! And addictive. And reeeeeeeeeeaaallly hard to resist. All it is is coconut oil, cocoa powder (100% cocoa) and honey. Put it all together in a pot and fridge it and voila! A secret weapon.

Artist

This month I discovered artist Andy Russell. Wow. His works, in acrylic paint, are just so dreamy and wonderful, I wish I could step in to those worlds that he so beautifully depicts and wander the streets of the glowing villages. He uses a glazing technique to get the illuminating effect, and it pays off!

Song

Hmmmm....this is a hard one. Let me go through my itunes.

It would probably be Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars...it’s just lots of fun really! I love to sing it, and both these singers are amazing, so there harmonies are INCREDIBLE! Check out the song on youtube here . And what is equally awesome is that the female singer, Joy Williams, is a Christian! Bonus! (And the dude reminds me of Johnny Depp)

(I just read that the band has actually broken up, D: )

My Diary

I've always loved being organised, and I’m also really artistic. Enter Frankie Magazine Diary 2013. THIS thing is the bomb. Each month has its own design, the hardcover is covered in a gorgeous red canvas material and there’s also cute little things inside like stickers, to do lists and a little pocket at the back to stash stuff in. It’s extra handy at the moment ‘cause  I’ve got so many appointments mixed with lovely, kind-hearted visitors, and I am so forgetful with this illness! I can write it all down and check it each day to make sure I’m on track.

Favorite purchase

I made many op-shop purchases this month, and my boyfriend bought me a few amazing pieces from DFO for Valentine’s day (thanks sweetie!). So the decision was hard. It was trying. It was pulling-my-hair-out-I-can’t-make-up-my-mind difficult. But I did it.

Drum roll please.

This ah-maazing  jacket my boyf got me. $48 down from $230.

What the what now?
You heard me! Well...sort of!

Scripture

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. Need I say more?

That is all.

Thank you.

Business as Usual.

I had a poker night a couple of weeks ago, and I channelled my inner tough nut!

Also, look forward to Wednesday, we have a new category coming up! (Providing I have the energy to complete the post!!)

('scuse the poor camera quality once again!)

My shirt was $1 from the thrift store, it has beautiful sheer detailing in all the swirly bits, simply gawjuss!
The pants were a gift from my motherdear
The bag was thrifted for 3 bucks
I was wearing the normal shoes, and Revlon Midnight Affair on my fingernails

The jacket was a DIY from years ago...I tied up with elastic bands and chucked it in a bucket of Demesdos (which is a bleaching cleaning fluid)...it STUNK for ages....but it looks cool!!

Have a good one!

I'm BAAAAACK! + Little red shorts.

I have returned! And I have come baring a new weapon: a schedule.

I am, officially at least, going to be creating a new post each Friday, Monday and Wednesday. There may be a few surprises here and there, but this is just to get things in working order, and to give you pretties something to look forward to!

So, as a reward for your patience whilst I have been away resting myself, here is a pretty little number for you to enjoy:

My shorts are thrifted, I think they were about five dollars from le Salvation Army
The shirt was thrfted from Vinnies YEARS ago and I cannot recall the price (sorry dears)
The belt is from Vinnies as well and was $2
And the bracelet (which is actually a necklace, sneaky, I know.) was my dear mother's.
The scar belonged to my older sister, once upon a time,
And the jacket.  That precious thing. That B-E-A-YOOOOtiful (kudos to you Bruce Almighty fans) little number...is vintage AND was $2 from a garage sale.
